Manage Dog Shedding
What is shedding and what can we learn about it?
Dog shedding is the natural process of the coat ridding itself of hair that is old, detached, and in some cases, damaged. Once older hair is shed, room for new and healthy hair can be made. The shedding process is completely normal for all canines but it can be frustrating for pet owners who feel like all they do is vacuum up piles of fluff!
The frequency and amount of hair that is shed depends on several factors, including the dog’s breed, weather conditions, diet, potential allergies, and much more. Regardless of the cause, it is possible to keep shedding under control through at-home grooming and proper diet.

Spring Cleaning Tips
Beds and Bedding
Follow these four steps to ensure a clean, comfortable sleep for Fido.
A removable fabric cover is a must, when choosing a bed.
Vacuum the bed regularly to remove hair, dirt, and other debris. Follow up with a lint roller to pull away any hair the vacuum may have left behind.
Wash the cover and the bed base (if it’s machine washable) in cold water. Use a mild laundry detergent—no dyes or fragrance. Add a cup of baking soda to help neutralize odor.

Dog Dental Care is Worth It
You may have heard that it’s unnecessary for you to maintain your dog’s dental hygiene because dogs will instinctively take care of their teeth by chewing. However, this belief is not entirely accurate. Like humans, dogs can suffer periodontal disease, tooth decay, injured teeth, and other oral problems. Beyond discomfort and bad breath, these dental problems can lead to serious health issues.
When it comes to dental hygiene, taking preventative steps at home along with regular office visits are well worth the effort. Not only for your pet’s overall health and comfort, but for your budget as well. Canine teeth cleaning or periodontal care performed by a veterinarian is a costly medical treatment and requires that your dog be sedated. Why not try to minimize the need if you can?

Professional Canine Dental Cleaning Explained
Does your dog need a dental cleaning? Perhaps you have smelled some pretty bad breath or seen a lot of tartar on your dog’s teeth. Maybe your veterinarian recommended a dental cleaning during a routine wellness examination. You may be hesitant or worried because you don’t have all the information. Dental health is an important part of every dog’s well-being. If your vet detects dental disease, a professional cleaning may be recommended in order to keep your dog healthy. If you notice signs of dental disease, it’s important to discuss it with your vet.

Birthday Celebrations!!
Celebrate your pup’s birthday with this peanut butter-banana birthday cake! This recipe is easily cut in half for smaller celebrations, and can also be portioned into cupcake tins for individual servings. (And yes, humans can have some too, if the dogs are willing to share).
Ingredients
Vegetable oil or cooking spray, for pan
2 c. all-purpose flour, plus more for pan
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
2 c. mashed ripe banana (from about 4 large bananas)
6 tbsp. smooth peanut butter
2 large eggs
1/4 c. pure maple syrup

Six tips on promoting a happier, healthier year for your dog
Tip #1 Review Your Dog’s Food Intake
The New Year is the perfect time to evaluate what, when and how much your pet is eating. Guessing or eyeballing your pet’s daily intake can result in overfeeding and weight gain. Use a measuring cup and follow the directions on the bag to ensure that your pet is receiving the proper food portion at every meal.
Tip #2 Try a Puzzle Feeder
Not only is using a puzzle feeder an easy way to improve your pup’s life and encourages good behavior – it also increases mental stimulation and daily life enrichment.

Why Grooming Your Dog is Important.
Grooming provides many health benefits for your dog which may not be immediately obvious. Brushing your dog ventilates their coat, helping it grow healthy and strong and takes away old and damaged hair. Grooming also ensures that your dog’s skin can breathe and keeps down the level of grease in their coat. Too much grease can block pores and cause irritation and all sorts of skin problems. Running a brush through their coat acts as a nice massage which promotes healthy blood circulation. Grooming is a great bonding time, the more regularly you do it, the more they’ll get used to it and it should become a soothing relaxing experience for you both.

Let’s Spread Some Cheer!!!
The Holiday Season is precious time spent with family and friends. The Pawsh Dog is looking for your help in collecting food items and gifts for local families in need. In partnership with the Christmas Cheer Board, The Pawsh Dog will provide three families with a Christmas hamper this year.
What food items are we looking to collect?
Juice, Canned Soups, Canned Vegetables, Jelly Powder, Canned Fruits, Macaroni & Cheese, Pasta, Spaghetti Sauce, Rice, Oatmeal, Canned Tuna, Peanut Butter, Pancake Mix, Pancake Syrup, Stuffing Mix, Jam, Cookies, Cake Mix, Candy, Gravy Mix, Cranberry Sauce, Sugar, Tea, Scalloped Potatoes, Bbq sauce, Taco Kits, Pizza kits, Flour, Crackers.

The Positive Effects of Play
1. You’ll Keep Them Mentally Healthy!
Like humans, dogs can get bored easily. It’s even worse if you’re a pet parent who has to work all day, leaving them at home.
Playing with your dog really helps with the mental aspect of boredom and stimulates their brain. Interactive games like throwing a ball and having them fetch helps to build their focus and discipline.

Does your Dog need a Coat?
Some dogs are naturally more adapted than others to the cold. For those dogs which aren’t, a dog jacket or coat can make for a more comfortable walk during the winter, spring, and autumn months.
A lot of pet owners who are new to the concept of clothing for dogs make the assumption that dog clothing is a human idea, and that it doesn’t have any practical relevance to their pets. This is not the case. Dog clothing can be very practical, especially in Canada and other parts of the world which are routinely subjected to cold temperatures and harsh winds and precipitation. Some dogs are naturally more adapted than others to the cold. For those dogs which aren’t, a dog jacket or coat can make for a more comfortable walk during the winter, spring, and autumn months.

Benefits of Doggie Daycamp
A relationship between a dog and a human should be rewarding, not stressful! These are just a few of the reasons that you would benefit from enrolling your pup in dog day camp.
1. Change up the scenery!
Psychologists have shown that when we experience a setback, making positive changes to our daily routines, even by doing something as small as taking a new route to or from work, leads to clearer thinking and happier outcomes. The same is true for our furry loved ones. If you have been sitting in front of a window, staring at the same tree everyday for months, it would most likely be beneficial to go out and experience something new for a change, perhaps even meet someone and make new friends.

We love to hear valuable feedback, and where possible, we use this to make our daycare acitivities, grooming and hotel services even stronger. Here’s what some of our pet parents thought about our services and facilities – in their own words.
Chantal (Dog Hotel)
I left Louie for the first time for a week in your care. I missed him so much but I absolutely loved my daily report cards from your staff. It just helped me get a glimpse of what his day was like with you and it really made me feel like you cared. Thank you

How to Tell Your Dog is Stressed While Traveling
Stress is a commonly used word that describes feelings of strain or pressure. Our dogs can become stressed too. Since we know how stress makes us feel, we certainly want to help alleviate our pet’s stress as well. However, our dogs cannot voice their feelings so how can we tell they are stressed? The signs of anxiety in dogs are often subtle. In fact, some stress-related behaviors mimic normal behaviors especially when traveling. We, humans can often be distracted during travel therefore not being able to distinguish between the two behaviours.

Preparing Your Dog For a Luxury Hotel Stay or Kennel
When you’re planning a trip away from home, it’s important to know that your dog will be well cared for, safe, and happy. Whether your dog will be staying with a boarding facility or luxury dog hotel, finding a place that has your dog’s best interest at heart will give you peace of mind while you enjoy your own vacation.
Before You Board Your Dog
Consider whether your dog has the right temperament for staying at a boarding facility. If the dogs are in daycare during the day at the facility, your dog will need to have good social skills. If your dog doesn’t enjoy the company of other dogs, look for a boarding facility or specialty dog hotel that offers unique ways of housing your dog in a healthy manner.
Preventing and Treating Travel Anxiety in Dogs
Travel anxiety can ruin a road trip before you even hit the highway. Dogs can be great travel companions, but before you gas up the car and back out of the driveway, there are a few things you can do to make your dog’s trip in the car smoother, safer, and more enjoyable for everybody.
Car Sickness in Dogs
Dogs can get car sick while riding in the car, and often this leads to travel anxiety. Feeling sick whenever they are in the car doesn’t help build a positive association for your dog, which contributes to the anxiety they feel when they have to go for a car ride.

Flying can be stressful for dogs
We all know that travelling can be a stressful experience for anyone, but trying to fly with your dog is a completely different thing. There are several reasons why it’s suggested you should not fly with your dog. Flying has been shown to be stressful for many domestic animal species like dogs. It is especially stressful for crated dogs flying in the cargo hold during the loading and unloading periods.
If you have to fly with your pooch, follow these concepts to reduce the personal stress that your dog is feeling.

Peanut Butter Pumpkin Painting
What an incredible turn out for our “Peanut Butter Pumpkin Painting Party”! The Pawsh Dog hosted the Halloween themed craft project on October 26, 27 and 28. The dogs created a painted pumpkin by licking peanut butter off a pumpkin drizzled with paint and covered with plastic. What an excellent exercise in socialization and group behaviour. Thank you to all of the pet parents who brought out their dogs to participate.
In honour of Halloween, daycare dogs in care had the chance to “paint” by licking the outside of a pumpkin covered with peanut butter. The pumpkin was covered with a clear plastic bag and different coloured non-toxic paints, then tightly closed. When the dogs start licking the outside of the pumpkin – the movement moves the paint and results in a very creative painted pumpkin!
Puppy Playtime Halloween Howl
Join us on Friday, October 29th at 6:10pm to celebrate our Puppy Playtime Halloween Howl (located at 1580 Taylor). The Pawsh Dog will have many spooky themed toys for the puppies to nibble on and goulish music while pet parents can enjoy a few treats too!
Well-socialized puppies usually develop into safer, more relaxed and enjoyable adult dogs. This is because they’re more comfortable in a wider variety of situations than poorly socialized dogs, so they’re less likely to behave fearfully or aggressively when faced with something new.
Puppy Playtime is where puppies can make new friends and have fun in a safe, enriching, and supervised environment with puppies their own size. And hey, sometimes the parents make new friends too!
Puppy playtime is a social event for puppies and their owners. When you arrive at puppy playtime, you will be greeted by our trained playtime facilitator who will review a few guidelines for puppy play time with you.

Halloween Safety
1. Secure Your Dog Away From The Door
If your dog tends to sneak out the front door when you open it, it might be best to crate them or keep them in a bedroom for a few hours for safety — and sanity.
You can set up a safe space for your dog in a comfortable room of the house with some calming music playing. Give your dog fresh water and check on them often. This is a good way to keep them away from the door and let them relax on this stressful night.
Another solution is to sit outside with your bowl of candy for trick-or-treaters so you don’t need to open the door at all. This will also cut back on knocking and doorbells that could make your dog anxious.
